Via de e-mail ontving ik een persoonlijke uitnodiging van The Brick Lane Gallery in Londen om deel te nemen aan een groepsexpositie van halverwege juni tot en met begin juli.

My name is Vittoria. I’m an exhibition assistant at The Brick Lane Gallery in Shoreditch, East London. We are currently looking for artists to exhibit in our rentable gallery space and I found your work in Inspiration: International Art Book.

Your works impressed me and I really enjoyed looking at your portfolio. It would be great to find out more about your practice and promote your works to a new audience through The Brick Lane Gallery.

I think your works would be suitable for our next Portraits exhibition, which is a very good opportunity for emerging and international artists to show their artworks. This exhibition will take place from 19th June – 2nd July.

All our exhibitions are fee-based, as we take no commissions on any sold artwork, and includes various services, such as promotion, installation and opening night reception. Alternatively, you can hire one of our two gallery spaces to host your own solo show.

Een korte zoektocht op internet leverde interessante informatie op.
De kosten voor deze veertien dagen tellende groepsexpositie bedragen afgerond €750 voor een afmeting van 3m. Onduidelijk is of het hier gaat om de hoogte of de breedte; hoogstwaarschijnlijk dat laatste. Dit is de kleinste en daarom ook het goedkoopste muuroppervlak.

Via Google maps kreeg ik ook inzage in ervaringen van kunstenaars met deze galerie. De ervaringen zijn niet zo heel erg uiteenlopend, eigenlijk zijn er twee kampen: of de kunstenaars zijn heel erg lovend over de galerie en de behulpzaamheid/klantvriendelijkheid of ze zijn heel erg negatief hierover. Sommigen nemen zelfs het woord scam (afzetterij) in de mond.

Ik hou aan deze uitnodiging een dubbel gevoel over.
Eerst er maar eens een nachtje over slapen.
