Na het inzenden van de foto’s en het Artist Statement voor ATIM’s Top 60 Masters 2022 met de prijsuitreiking in New York, aankomende juni, is ook de afspraak voor het online interview ingepland.
Het zogenaamde ART2HEART online interview zal plaatsvinden op 25 mei aanstaande (de dag voor Hemelvaart).
Aangezien we, Merlin en ik, dat interview samen zullen doen, leek mij dit een geschikt moment, omdat we de volgende dag gewoon vrij zijn.
Sowieso kon het online interview alleen maar op een woensdag plaatsvinden.
Met het tijdsverschil met New York, is het prettig om dit in de avond (Nederlandse tijd) te hebben en dat is dan ook gelukt.
Het idee is dat ik naar Merlin toe reis om daar samen het interview te gaan doen.

Bij het maken van de afspraak gaf de organisatie al een paar vragen om ons op voor te bereiden:
What Inspires You? What connection do you have to your art?
What does your art aim to say?
What’s your biggest barrier to being an artist? How do you address it?
What does generosity mean to you as an artist? How do you emulate this?
What’s next for your creative endeavors?
Deze zijn wel heel specifiek gericht op de kunstenaar.
Bij het maken van de afspraak kon ik ook nog extra dingen opgeven, waar ik dankbaar gebruik van heb gemaakt, zodat ook Merlin bij hen in beeld komt.

Although awarded for my complete oeuvre, the submission is made only with photos of Merlin Sen.
Reason for this is that I also want to have Merlin in the spotlights and more or less promote her as a upcoming and aspiring model.
I don’t make photos purely for myself but I think it’s important to create something that adds value to my model.
That is why I think it is important that there is good communication before, during and after the photo shoot because a photo is the product of all these things. The photo shoot itself is only a very small part of this in terms of time (around 10 – 20%).
I invest a lot of time in getting to know and maintaining contact with my model (and the parents). I think it is important that there is a connection between us as people in the purest sense of the word. What keeps them busy? So it is not only the face in front of the camera that is important to me, but also the person behind that face.
I think that is where I differ from the more commercial photographers.
The “studio” photos are created in the livingroom of the model, for which I will bring my portable photostudio to the model.
Therefore I travel a lot.
The editing process of a photo can take up to three working days (as is the case for example of photo Merlin (0801) and Merlin (1208)).
It often is done at a pixel level to achieve the best possible image I can get and can be reproduced on a large format in print or for a publication like yours.
I try to keep the editing as natural as possible, never changing the features of a model as is done so much lately by photographers and retouchers, but I do put my own artistic spin on it.
There’s a difference in fine-art and portrait photography and fashion editing.
