Vandaag heb ik, een dag voor de definitieve deadline, de keuze gemaakt om een foto van Merlin in te zenden voor de Muse Photography Awards 2023.
De Muse Photography Awards is een internationale wedstrijd voor fotografen, zowel amateur en professioneel en is onderdeel van de International Awards Associate (IAA), gesetteld in New York, waartoe ook de London Photography Awards, European Photography Awards en de New York Photography Awards behoren, waaraan al eerder is meegedaan.
De deelname aan de Muse Photography Awards is nu voor de tweede keer.
Vorig jaar was ook een foto van Merlin ingestuurd voor deze wedstrijd en die foto ontving maar liefst 2x goud en 2x zilver in de verschillende categorieën.
Het bijbehorende beeldje heb ik in september vorig jaar kunnen overhandigen aan Merlin en staat nu, van wat ik heb begrepen, te pronken op Merlins kamer.
De keuze voor de foto is er eentje geworden uit de fotoshoot die we drie dagen geleden hebben gedaan en waar Merlin zelf razend enthousiast over is: “O wauwww deze is nu al mijn favoriet echt zo super mooi!” en dat is foto Merlin (1702-2).

Net als bij alle deelnames aan de wedstrijden van IAA kost het insturen van een foto nog wel de nodige voorbereidingen, keuzes maken en het invullen van de verschillende invoervelden.
Om te beginnen zijn daar de 10 categorieën (die elk weer onderverdeeld zijn in subcategorieën) waarin een foto kan worden ingestuurd.

Twee categorieën lijken voor de foto van Merlin het meest geschikt: Commercial en People.
Anders dan bij voorgaande wedstrijden, heb ik nu een pakket ter waarde van $185 aangeschaft waarmee in totaal tien inzendingen kunnen worden gedaan.
Elke subcategorie waarin een foto wordt ingezonden wordt als één inzending gezien.
Die kost dus nu $ 18,50 ten opzichte van vorige wedstrijden $ 30 per inzending.
Niet alle tien inzendingen heb ik gebruikt voor de foto van Merlin.
Uiteindelijk kwam ik uit op vier inzendingen.
Van de categorie Commercial de subcategorieën CM2303 Beauty & Cosmetics en CM2310 Fashion.
Van de categorie People is de foto ingeschreven in de subcategorieën PE2304 Children en PE2316 Portrait.
Na de keuze voor de categorieën te hebben gemaakt, wordt er enige (technische) info gevraagd:

“After the success of the MUSE 2022 Awards, I already decided to take part of the 2023 edition and the week before the deadline my Muse Merlin (14 years old) and I had a fantastic photoshoot of which this is one of the photos.
Merlin and I work together for almost 2 1/2 year now and I can definitely say she’s my Muse.
The mother of Merlin wanted to have some highend fashionphotos of her daughter and I think we succeeded with this photo.
As most of the time, the photo was shot at the models home, with my portable photostudio.”

Een negentienkoppige jury, 2 uit Italië, 1 uit Spanje, 1 uit Canada, 1 uit de Tsjechische Republiek, 1 uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, 2 uit China, 1 uit Maleisië, 3 uit India, 3 uit de Verenigde Staten, 1 uit Dominica, 1 uit Roemenië, 1 uit Frankrijk en 1 uit Portugal, zal zich straks buigen over de inzendingen van alle fotografen.
Bij de beoordeling wordt gelet op de volgende dingen (te vinden op de website van de organisatie):

Entries receiving an average score under 50 do not receive an award.
The MUSE Photography Awards and International Awards Associate Inc’s decision are final in its sole discretion and binding in relation to all matters relating to Competitions and may not be subject to any discussions or correspondence.
Judging is blind.
All entrant information is removed from entries to prevent bias/conflict of interest.
Hoe worden de winnaars dan bepaald?
Entries are judged at random without comparison to other entries in a category.
Amateur/student photographers are not compared to Professional Photographers in the same category.
To ensure high standards of high quality, a category may have multiple winners or no winners.
Work is critiqued rated by consensus, with the panel of judges determining a rating on a scale of 100 points.
There are FIVE (5) levels of achievement in the competition:
MUSE Photographers of the Year
MUSE Category Winners of the Year (10 Categories)
Platinum MUSE (85-100 points)
Gold MUSE (70-84 points)
Silver MUSE (50-69 points)
The number of awards presented by MUSE Photography Awards is determined by the number of submissions in a given category, the scoring range and the number of tie scores.
De uitslag van de wedstrijd wordt op 14 april bekend gemaakt.
Ik vind het spannend om te zien hoe ver de foto van Merlin kan gaan komen!
