Via de e-mail kreeg ik een open uitnodiging om werk in te sturen voor de fotogalerie Decode in Tucson, Arizona, Verenigde Staten om werk ten toon te stellen in deze galerie.
De Decode Gallery kwam bij mij in beeld door middel van een wekelijkse nieuwsbrief die ik ontvang van de website Call for Entry (CaFÉ).
Daarin stond onder andere een oproep voor een aankomende expositie in het vierkante formaat.
Na de website van de galerie te hebben bekeken, zag ik wel een interessante mogelijkheid, mede ook doordat zij regelmatig een oproep doen; je zou het kunnen zien als een veredelde wedstrijd waarbij foto’s in een expositie kunnen komen.
Wat ook prettig is, is dat je een reminder kunt laten sturen wanneer de termijn van inzenden voor een expositie bijna is verstreken.
En dat is precies ook wat ik vandaag ontving.
Over de galerie is op de website te lezen:
“Decode Gallery is an up and coming photography gallery in the blossoming art scene of Tucson, Arizona.
The gallery is located in a historic neighborhood near the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson.
Tucson is home to the Center for Creative Photography, which contains an extensive archive of work from photographers including Ansel Adams, Adward Weston, and more.
Decode is a submission based photography gallery.
We are dedicated to giving fine art photographers the important opportunity to show their work.”
De galerie is dus vergelijkbaar met de is Espace Vision’Art Gallery in Parijs waar ik dit en komend jaar foto’s in expositie heb.
Puur en alleen gericht op fotografie.
Hun missie:
“We are committed to fostering creativity, and providing opportunities for photographers to showcase their work in a supportive environment. We offer exhibition opportunities to local and international photographic artists.”
Het specifieke thema voor de aankomende expositie is “Square Photography“:
“We are seeking photography of any genre in a square format.
Whether you specialize in portraits, landscapes, documentary, architecture, or conceptual photography, we’d love to see submissions that embrace the creative possibilities within a square frame.
This is a monthly rotating exhibit for the gallery, please read below for more details.”
Wanneer wordt een foto toegelaten tot de expositie?
“12 images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Decode Gallery. The gallery handles all printing for accepted photographers for free, we print professionally on an Epson printer with Ilford Pearl paper.
We will only print one exhibition print, after the show the print will be archived in a flat file for 6 months. We feature museum quality 14”x 14” inch frames.
Our mats are cut to 7″x7″.
If the photographer has selected to list the exhibition print for sale and someone inquires, the photographer will be notified immediately.
All rights to the image file and print remain with the photographer. Decode Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, 50% goes to the photographer.
Photographers will be notified by email of acceptance within two weeks after the submission deadline.
Gallery opening will be on October 5th.”
De inzendingsdeadline is 6 september 2024 en wanneer één of meerdere foto’s door de jury worden goedgekeurd (in totaal een twaalftal van verschillende fotografen), zal de fysieke expositie plaats vinden van 5 tot en met 26 oktober in de galerie.
Net als bij Espace Vision’Art Gallery zal de foto op hun kosten worden afgedrukt op Ilford Pearl Paper.
Dat fotopapier van Ilford komt me wel heel erg bekend voor, want daar druk ik zelf ook mijn foto’s op af wanneer dat nodig is.
De jury wordt voorgezeten door Holly Hart, zo valt te lezen op de website:
“Holly Hart is a conceptual fine art photographer.
She grew up in Southern Oregon.
In 2011 she graduated with a BA in Photography from the Art Institute of Seattle.
Her work has been published internationally in magazines as well as exhibited in galleries nationwide.
Her love of fine art photography led her to the creation of Decode Gallery, a gallery looking to give photographers the important opportunity to exhibit.”
Het lijkt mij dan ook de moeite waard om hier een poging te gaan wagen, maar het is nog een beetje lastig in te schatten waar de galerie nu precies haar voorkeur voor heeft.
Er wordt een kleine vergoeding van $40 gevraagd om tot 10 foto’s in te sturen voor de wedstrijd, met dus als prijs dat één of meerdere foto’s een maand lang tentoon worden gesteld in de galerie.
Wordt misschien vervolgd.
