Vandaag is één foto van Merlin ingestuurd voor de New York Photography Awards 2023, die wordt georganiseerd door The International Awards Associate (IAA).
De New York Photography Awards is onderdeel van The International Awards Associate (IAA).
Namens deze organisatie worden de Creative, Design en Hotel Awards, de Vega Digital Awards, de NYX Awards, de TITAN Awards en de New York Awards uitgereikt.
Vorig jaar is ook een inzending gedaan voor deze Awards met foto’s van Merlin, omdat we toen ook in New York geweest zijn.
De uitslag van de Awards 2022 kwam een beetje met horten en stoten, maar uiteindelijk kreeg de inzending van vijf foto’s twee keer een zilveren onderscheiding en was er vier keer een eervolle vermelding.
Het was de eerste keer dat er aan deze Awards is meegedaan en toentertijd leek het er op dat alleen New York gerelateerde foto’s mochten meedoen.
Achteraf blijkt dat ook andere foto’s hadden kunnen worden ingezonden en daar is dit keer voor gekozen.
Weliswaar niet voor vijf foto’s maar, gezien de kosten, slechts voor één foto die overigens wel in verschillende categorieën is ingeschreven.
De foto die is ingezonden dit jaar is foto Merlin (1807-2) omdat die het bij verschillende wedstrijden op ViewBug steeds zo goed doet en, als ik dan toch de link moet leggen met New York: het is ook de foto die begin september dit jaar groot(s) op een billboard op Times Square is vertoond.
De foto is in drie hoofdcategorieën ingeschreven, te weten People Photography, Fine Art Photography en New York Photography.
In de People Photography in de subcategorie Fine Art:

en in de New York Photography in de subcategorie Portrait.
Bij de foto’s moesten ook nog de specificaties worden opgegeven (ISO, sluitertijd, diafragma, en met welke camera gemaakt).
En vervolgens een beschrijving van de foto.
“The photo was shot in the livingroom of Merlin’s parents with my portable photostudio.
We wanted a more fine-art portrait this time, using a hat and a flower. I used a beautydish in front of Merlin and an umbrella pointed to a white wall on the left of Merlin, in this way creating a soft light.
Merlin is against a grey, fabric backdrop.
In postproduction I added the colors that are also in the main subject.”
De jury van de wedstrijd bestaat uit maar liefst 61 leden, uit verschillende landen ter wereld.
Bij de beoordeling wordt gelet op de volgende dingen (te vinden op de website van de organisatie):
Judges score on a scale of 1-100, based on the below criteria.
- Originality (Uniqueness of Concept / Expression of Theme)
- Creativity / Story / Mood
- Technical Execution (Composition, Color, Lighting, Exposure and Focus)
- Marketability / Newsworthiness / Current / Potential Social Impact
- Overall Impression / Wow! Factor / Memorable
Entries receiving an average score under 60 do not receive an award.
Judging is blind.
All entrant information is removed from entries to prevent bias/conflict of interest.
New York Photography Awards’ judging process is designed to be impartial and free from outside influences by withholding both the names of the judges on its panel as well as the contestant’s names throughout the entire evaluation process.
Both judge and contestant names are withheld until after award winning entries are selected.
This anonymity shelters all involved from any vested interest which may attempt to influence the judges’ opinions or the judging process.
Hoe worden de winnaars dan bepaald?
Entries are judged at random without comparison to other entries in a category.
Work is evaluated on criteria determined by the job’s requirements (see Judging Criteria).
Amateur/student photographers are not compared to Professional Photographers in the same category.
To ensure high standards of high quality, a category may have multiple winners or no winners.
Work is critiqued rated by consensus, with the panel of judges determining a rating on a scale of 100 points.
There are FIVE (5) levels of achievement in the competition:
New York Photographer of the Year
Category Winners of the Year (10 Categories)
Gold Winner (85-100 points)
Silver Winner (60-84 points)
Honorable Mentions (50-59 points)
The number of awards presented by New York Photography Awards are determined by the number of submissions in a given category, the scoring range and the number of tie scores.
De uitslag van de wedstrijd wordt op of rond 15 december bekend gemaakt en ik ben heel erg benieuwd hoe de foto het van Merlin gaat doen en of die wellicht ook in de prijzen gaat vallen!
