Voor de vierde keer dit jaar had ik eind april een foto ingestuurd voor de Legacy Photography Awards (LPA).
Vanavond kreeg ik een e-mail met de uitslag en de ingestuurde foto van Catinca kreeg bij deze wedstrijd een Honorable Mention.
Net als bij voorgaande inzendingen dit jaar, ontving ik ook dit keer weer een prachtige, uitgebreide recensie over de ingestuurde foto.
De mail zoals ik die ontving:

Once again you have presented us with a beautiful portrait and once again you show us your care and skill in harmonising the colours in a subtle but striking way.
The pink tones are distributed diagonally, creating an irresistible visual journey in which we ‘meet’ the irresistible eyes of the model, the indisputable point of maximum interest of the image.
The sharpness is absolute, especially in the eyes where the catchlight adds a touch of life and energy to the look.
We like the ¾ pose in which you have placed the girl. It increases the sense of depth and moves away from the classic, static frontal portrait.
We also like the fact that she is slightly displaced to the left, leaving space for her gaze and giving sense to the negative space on the right. Good job!!!
There are some details we would like to comment on, so we have taken the liberty of sending you a layered file where you can see each of the above mentioned points.
Due to lack of time we have not been able to do a thorough job.
Also, keep in mind that we are working from a jpg file (which we have converted to psd at 16 bits), which prevents us from obtaining more detail or making exposure adjustments as it would be ideal, but we think it will help you to understand better what we mean in each comment.
We don’t like to manipulate another photographer’s images without their consent so we apologise in advance if we have upset you, but our intention is simply to show you some small details that you may have overlooked 🙂
On the model’s dress, we can see areas that show a loss of detail.
We don’t know if this is due to an image compression problem, to reflections on the fabric or to cloning, perhaps trying to eliminate hair.
In the ‘Split Frequency Texture Dress’ folder, we have used the high frequency layer to clone the missing textures of the dress fabric.
Of course, the result doesn’t stand up to an exhaustive review as the cloning has been done in seconds, but it will serve to remind you to keep this ‘weapon’ in your arsenal in case of need 🙂
On her arm, you can see that there are transitions that affect the tonal continuity.
It is normal for that to happen, but in case you are looking for a uniformity in the skin, it is necessary to retouch those slight variations.

We also see that the model’s neck and dress, in the area of her chest, show the same amount of light as the face, which is also normal as the skin in that area is more lighter than the face and the dress reflects more light than her skin.
Because our brain gives more importance to the light areas than to the dark ones, if you want the face to take centre stage, we advise you to lower the brightness of these two areas.
Something similar happens with the light area in the background, just behind the model’s head.
Note that it is the lightest part of the background and located precisely behind the dark hair, so the contrast diverts our attention there.
Perhaps it would be interesting to darken that part of the background slightly and lighten the top part of the hair.
It is interesting that the blond or light brown hair does not tend to black, but still shows detail across its entire surface.

Legacy Photography Awards Team
Enkele minuten eerder had ik al een e-mail ontvangen van de contactpersoon van deze wedstrijd, waarin ze zich verontschuldigde voor de “late” uitslag van deze maand:
Kind regards.”En via WeTransfer kreeg ik de genoemde bestanden toegestuurd waarnaar in de review wordt verwezen.
Het betreft deze bestanden, allereerst over het gebrek aan detail in de jurk van Catinca:
In de e-mail wisseling die ik erna nog heb gehad – en waar in de review over wordt gerept – heeft dit te maken met de compressie tot het formaat van de foto dat ik mag insturen.
In het originele bestand is wel degelijk nog textuur te zien, maar door de lichtval is dit wel heel miniem.
Verder wordt en in de review geschreven over de zogenaamde Frequency Seperation (FS) methode bij het editen van een foto.
Op het moment dat ik deze foto bewerkte, had ik die techniek nog niet ontdekt.
Wat ik toentertijd (in 2018) wel gebruikte waren zogenaamde Luminosity Masks om meer contrast toe te voegen aan de foto.
Deze had ik op 100% gezet, waardoor sommige delen van de foto – en speciaal de donkere delen – textuur kwijtraken.
Als ik het nu zou gebruiken (en heel af en toe doe ik dat ook), zou ik de opacity een heel stuk terug brengen.
Wellicht dat ik nu ook deze ietwat lichte vlek wat donker zou maken met de dodge en burn techniek, die ik in 2018 ook net had ontdekt.Het is in ieder geval goed te zien dat de jury kennis van zaken heeft.Wat ik heel erg leuk vind om te lezen is de tweede alinea:

Het is niet iets waar ik me van bewust ben geweest en ook zeker niet bewust in de foto heb gebracht.
Opnieuw dus weer een inhoudelijk prachtige review van de medewerkers van de organisatie; wat moet daar toch een hoop tijd in zitten, maar is absoluut van waarde!
Als laatste wil ik nog toevoegen dat ik eigenlijk een andere versie van deze foto had willen uploaden, namelijk Catinca (0102-2), maar doordat ik het op het allerlaatste moment heb ingezonden, heb ik niet goed opgelet bij het insturen.
In de e-mail wordt ook aangegeven dat de foto’s te bekijken zijn op de Facebookpagina en op de website.
Maar op het moment van schrijven is de link van de website waar de foto’s zouden moeten verschijnen nog niet actief.
Inmiddels weet ik dat dat op een later moment nog volgt.
Daarnaast staat in de e-mail dat ik de Accreditations en Badges kan ontvangen als ik het e-mail bericht beantwoord met “Yes”.
Dat ga ik natuurlijk ook doen.
Hoe worden de winnaars van deze maandelijkse wedstrijd bepaald?
“The photographs presented will be judged by the Legacy Photography Awards team and they will evaluate the originality, composition, lighting, creativity, visual impact and quality of retouching in case there is.
The team will choose a Winner, a Second and Third place in each category.
In the event that some photographs achieve the same score as those selected as Second and Third place, they will receive the same distinction ex aqueo.
The organisers will distinguish as Excellence those photos which in their opinion deserve to be highlighted for their merit and quality and that have come close to the podium.
An unspecified number of Honourable Mentions will also be chosen.
Said Honorable Mentions will be divided into 3 levels:
Honorable Mention Gold will be awarded to photographs that have reached an exceptional level and mastery of all areas.
Honorable Mention Silver will be awarded to photographs that the judges consider excellent in their execution in most areas even though it may present some errors in technical or artistic execution.
Honorable Mention Bronze will be achieved to those photographs that the judges consider deserve to be highlighted.
The winners, Badge of Excellence and Honorable Mentions will be announced on the website and social networks of Legacy Photography Awards in approximately one week after the verdict.”
Zoals hierboven staat te lezen wordt er per categorie een winnaar, een 2e en een 3e plaats gegeven.
Verder is er een aantal foto’s die je als runner up zou kunnen zien (zeg meer een 4e plaats): die krijgen dan de waardering “excellence”.
Daarnaast wordt er een niet nader te noemen aantal eervolle vermeldingen gegeven.
Met nadruk op “een niet nader te noemen aantal”, want er zijn heel veel foto’s die zo’n eervolle vermelding krijgen, zodat deze onderscheiding heel veel van zijn waarde kwijt raakt.
In een eerder blogbericht, toen ik een foto had ingestuurd voor de wedstrijd van januari, schreef ik al hoeveel foto’s er een onderscheiding kregen in oktober vorig jaar:
1e plaats: 6
2e plaats: 36
3e plaats: 10
Excellence: 87
Goud: 104
Zilver: 80
Brons: 20
In dat kader bezien raakt de onderscheiding Honorable Mention – Gold ook weer veel van zijn waarde kwijt, al is niet goed in te schatten hoeveel foto’s er per maand worden ingezonden.
Neemt niet weg dat ik het een hele eer vind dat de foto van Catinca, Catinca (0102), deze onderscheiding heeft gekregen en weer toegevoegd kan worden aan de specifieke fotopagina van deze foto.
Om in de race te blijven voor de titel International Photographer of the Year, zal ik ook deze maand weer een (oudere) foto gaan insturen.
Maar welke dat gaat worden?
Wordt dus vervolgd.
